함백산은 태백시 남방에서 멀리 태백산을 바라보며 우뚝솟은 해발 1,573m의 고산으로 태백산맥의 종산으로 볼 수 있다. 비교적 완만한 경사를 이루고 있으나 능선부위에는 바람이 세기 때문에 산죽이 많고 그 위에 누운 듯이 잣나무, 낙엽송, 주목 등이 자란다. 신라고찰인 정암사가 위치하고 있고 문화재인 수마노탑이 유명하다.

As a major mountain of the (Mt. )Taebaeksan range, (Mt. Hambaeksan mountain with the elevation of 1,573m takes a position with the face towards (Mt. )Taebaeksan viewed from the south of Taebaek-si
in the distance. In general, this mountain is mildly inclined and along the ridges Korean pine, Japaness larch, Rigid-branch yew grow leaning over bamboos that lavishly covers the grounds in these areas because of the strong winds. Within the mountain, Jeongamsa(temple) of Shilla-dynasty is included and Sumanotop pagoda designated as a Cultural Monument has been well known.
